Red Sox manager says plan to play rookie at 1B being tabled for now

A important behind the scenes storyline for the Red Sox over the past limited weeks has been the plan to play Kristian Campbell at first base With Triston Casas and for a while Romy Gonzalez out on the injured list and limited other options the club began preparing the talented rookie for the new role on the fly Now those plans are being shelved Red Sox manager Alex Cora explained Monday that between Gonzalez s return from the IL and Abraham Toro s strong new performance Campbell is no longer needed as an urgent fix Toro s play has kind of helped us slow down that so Romy is going to play first Toro is going to play first Cora explained Kristian will still take grounders here and there but it s nothing we re planning on doing now Cora didn t rule out the possibility that Campbell might still play first base down the road but for now the club will have him focus more on his primarily position of second base and on working out of his latest slump at the plate In addition to Gonzalez s activation Cora provided a handful of additional injury updates Right-hander Kutter Crawford right patellar tendinopathy has thrown up to four innings in live batting practice and could potentially begin a rehab assignment in the near future Right-hander Tanner Houck right flexor pronator strain is playing catch with no soreness but has not yet begun throwing on a mound Third baseman Alex Bregman strained right quad has been getting medicine and is feeling better though he s still early in his recovery process Outfielder Masataka Yoshida right shoulder labral repair is throwing up to feet
