harmless bad things like burning the roof of your mouth on your coffee or getting a flat tire But sometimes they are very bad things the kinds of things that forever change your worldview Sorry Baby revolves around the second type of bad thing Written and directed by Eva Victor in their feature debut Sorry Baby also stars Victor as Agnes a college professor struggling in the aftermath of sexual assault Through their specific sensibilities and a sensitive directorial style Victor explores how experiencing assault fundamentally shifts the way you interact with the world It s a searingly honest portrayal of the healing process rife with pain humor and tenderness just as intent on exploring the strategies in which we help each other as it is the tactics in which we hurt Check out my full review here Photo provided by Sony Pictures Classics Don t Let s Go To the Dogs Tonight delves into colonialist mentality through the eyes of a child There s a moment in Don t Let s Go to the Dogs Tonight where Bobo Lexi Venter asks her mother if they are racists Bobo has grown up in Zimbabwe then Rhodesia in the s during the late stages of the country s civil war as nationalist groups seek to overthrow the minority British rule and return power to native Africans Bobo s mother Nicola Embeth Davidtz who also wrote and directed the film seems genuinely perturbed at the idea in a way that s a little funny after all how could she a white woman living in colonial Africa be racist But Bobo isn t really old enough to understand what racism is let alone how she and her family might be functioning participants in a system that perpetuates it She brings no negative connotation to the word she just heard it somewhere and thought it sounded an awful lot like particular people she knew This moment in encapsulates the film in a nutshell Over the program of the film Bobo begins to unlearn a colonial mentality and superiority complex that have been instilled in her since birth Since the film is so singularly focused on that perspective it s sometimes challenging for it to escape the colonialist point of view it s working to untangle But Don t Let s Go to the Dogs Tonight is hyper aware of how that perspective can be limiting and tries to use that to its advantage Read my full review here Photo provided by A At the Movies If you re looking for a movie to see in theaters this will apparently come as no surprise to anyone reading this newsletter that I am an AI skeptic particularly when it comes to its use in film and art That being announced I really enjoyed this Vulture conversation between Jerry Saltz and David Wallace-Wells one AI-skeptic and the other AI-curious about what constitutes the difference between AI art and art made by humans I particularly love this kicker quote from Jerry Maybe when AI starts having sex and fears death it will start making great art Critics deserve profiles too and this one is a doozy Andre Sennwald became the movie critic for the Times in at the age of He died in at the age of But even in his short tenure he witnessed and attempted to make sense of an industry that was promptly evolving whether it be moving from black and white to color or the invention of the Hays Code Richard Brody in the past few days wrote a wonderful essay dissecting the work of Sennwald for The New Yorker You can check that out here Who do you think are our greatest movie stars The Big Picture has certain thoughts particularly when it comes to the millennial and up demographic The podcast in the last few days issued their rundown of the best movie stars over the age of Take a listen to see if you agree The present day s Scene was edited by Julie E Bloemeke The post Grove Theatre reno appeared first on Rough Draft Atlanta
